Reggae.be Review – Christos DC ‘Self Evident’

Christos DC is the pseudonym of Christopher Vrenios, a son of two professional Washington DC opera singers (which immediately explains the last part of his stage name), in addition, Christopher has Greek blood and his grandmother nicknamed him Christos early on.

On this ‘Self Evident’, again the man’s sixth longplayer, mostly subdued introspective roots: “This album was less about a particular theme than it was a means of introspection for me. The songs are quite philosophical in nature, but not so direct in the language. I want people to listen to the lyrics carefully to interpret the meaning. “. For example, Christos philosophizes in opener ‘Silence’ about the value of silence, wondering whether deeds say little more than words, he states in ‘Better To Be Free’ that freedom is above safety, and closing song ‘In Peace’ is a plea for some more peace in this world full of conflicts and hot spots. There are collaborations with the Amsterdam based The Skankin ‘Monks (also on Christos’ previous album ‘Tessera’), São Paulo-based Dada Yute (heard in the slightly more up-tempo ‘I Reserve The Right’, immediately one of our favorites from the track list) and deDUBros, the project of the Italian musicians and producers Federico Cioni and Diego Cossentino Firenze (‘Be Wise’) and the entire project was mixed by Igrade Records producer Laurent ‘Tippy I’ Alfred. Besides the already mentioned ‘I Reserve The Right’, we also want you ‘Upward Looking Down’, with a lovely outro by wind section Brian Falkowski (saxophone), Joe Brotherton (trumpet) and Paul Hamilton (trombone), and title track ‘Self Recommend Evident ‘, Christos version on the World A Reggae riddim in 2019 produced by the Polish K-Jah Sound. Excellent meditative trip with a message!

Run it Agency | Christos DC releases fifth album ‘Self Evident’

Soulful-toned roots reggae singer Christos DC unveils his new album Self Evident via his own Honest Music imprint. The ten-song project is signposted by first single I Reserve The Right featuring Brazil’s Dada Yute.

Two years in the making, Self Evident is the Greek-American singer-songwriter and producer’s most profound and traditionally roots reggae album to date. Across ten tracks, Christos’ plaintive, delicate voice mingles with a colourful palette of soft yet crisp horns, blissful, celestial guitars, “question and answer” percussion, and gently insistent drum and bass.

In keeping their writer’s Greek heritage, the lyrics ask big philosophical questions, encouraging more understanding of life’s intricacies. Silence examines the role of saying nothing in our interactions, echoing the Greek philosopher Aristotle in valuing deeds over than words (and closing with a refrain reminiscent of ska classic Wings Of A Dove). Better To Be Free is a rumination on the concept of liberty, ranking it as more important than familiarity or security.

The free-flowing nature of Christos’ music is mirrored by his global choice of guests. Amsterdam’s Skankin Monks provide the rhythm for Better To Be Free, while Florence Italy’s deDUBros supply the backdrop to Be Wise. The sole vocal combination is socially conscious single I Reserve The Right, enlisting a fellow striking vocalist, Sao Paulo’s rising star Dada Yute.

The title track will already be known to fans of the World A Reggae riddim – produced by Poland’s K-Jah Sound and commissioned by World A Reggae online magazine. Closing plea In Peace was co-produced by Tomasz Wojcik, also from Poland, featuring players from the Maleo Reggae Rockers. The Self Evident project was mixed by St Croix dub-master Laurent Tippy Alfred, celebrated for his work with the late Vaughn Benjamin of Akae Beka.

“I have always had a love for old-school reggae and this is reflected in the sound of this album” says Christos of his project. “Horn sections have become quite an integral part of my sound and they play a strong role. I made no attempt to create a modern sound as an organic feel seemed to really suit the project. The songs are quite philosophical in nature dealing with themes such as the connection between our heart and mind. As well as the meaning of silence in our human engagements.”

Unified in sound and steeped in feeling, Self Evident dwells in that increasingly rare enclave of soulful, restorative and replenishing cultural reggae music. It’s an album that gently ushers you into a deeper, more introspective world. And, as its name suggests, it only needs to be heard to make its truths clear…

Self Evident is available on iTunes and Amazon and the CD format is on sale on Christos DC Bandcamp page.

Christos DC – Self Evident (Official Video)

Self evident was recorded for the World A Reggae 2019 rhythm album. When I was approached by K-Jah about the project I was already writing this song at the time over a different rhythm. However, When I heard the music it was A good match. While in Poland over the summer for the premiere at Ostroda #Reggae Festival a decision was made to shoot a video while in Warsaw with Krzysztof Gajewski. We were also fortunate enough to have footage donated by Reve Alberto from Tenerife. It’s vintage quality truly added a nice touch.

Self evident was written to express the importance of the present moment and how it impacts our future in life. That whatever truth we hold for ourselves becomes evident to others. That our thoughts and needs in life will direct our paths in accordance to one’s own truth.

“Tessera” – Impressive New Reggae Album From Christos DC

By: Randy Radic, Contributor

Christos DC drops his new album Tessera the day after tomorrow, July 28. The album is on the Honest Music label. Christos DC, aka Chris Vrenios, is a Greek-American singer/songwriter and producer. He has worked and recorded with a number of renowned reggae stars: Sly & Robbie, Thievery Corporation, Akae Beka and Don Carlos, the Grammy-nominated artist. At the present juncture, Christos DC and Don Carlos are engaged in an extensive European tour, playing in a variety of venues.

Stylistically, Christos DC is reggae. He amalgamates R&B, jazz, mento and calypso influences into his sound, which is distinctive, unique and all his own. And the fact that he includes covers of prominent songs simply illuminates his confidence as an artist.

Tessera contains twelve tracks. The first track is “Speak The Fire,” produced by The Skankin Monks and featuring Zafayah. It begins with a shamanic chant and organ, followed by the groove, with a nice sidestick from the drummer. The melody is soft, riding on the guitar, with a catchy rhythm tripping along smoothly. Christos’ vocals are mellow and honeyed, complemented by stellar background vocal harmonies.

“Human Dignity” carries a strong groove, along with brass and a crisp piano that really adds to the melody, which is flowing and just a bit funky. The horns are bright but subdued so they don’t overwhelm the music. Christos’ voice is especially compelling on this tune, providing the song with a solid sonic impact. A halting R&B flavor runs through “Life,” which features a cantering melody that receives cool harmonics from drawling horns and the syncopated groove. The vocals almost sound as if filtered, but they’re not. It’s simply Christos utilizing vocal inflection to provide a unique sonic take on the song’s feeling.

“The Desperate Ones” is a solid remake of one of Nina Simone’s less well-known songs. There’s a definite R&B thread running through Christos’ version. The thread adds a melancholic feel to the melody, as does Christos’ poignant use of his voice. This is one of my favorites on the album. “Come Along” starts with a drum roll, and then settles into a steady groove and slightly tinny sounding melody, and muted vocals. The song is short, less than a minute in length, but catchy.
